Mythology of Dhana Lakshmi
Legend has it that once Lakshmi and Vishnu had an argument about the importance of money. She left Vaikunta( Abode of God Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi) and went to live on Earth in a human form. Vishnu was unable to reconcile to a life without Lakshmi and followed her to Earth where he resided as a poor forest dweller. Circumstances led to them meeting, but Vishnu was unable to come up with the money to marry Dhanalakshmi. He was forced to take a loan from the God of wealth, Kubera who insisted that Vishnu should not leave without repaying the loan. Many years passed but Vishnu was unable to repay the loan and ultimately realized the importance of money. His wife, Dhanalakshmi, blessed him with money and he became indebted to her. It is said that till today the money which is collected in the holy temple of Lord Balaji in the Tirumala hills, is used by him to repay his loan to Kubera.
